The most popular district of the Florida Keys is Key West which can be found about 90 miles north of Havana Cuba. It has a reputation as a tropical paradise and is a roughly oval shaped island with the majority of action occurring on the West End. Worth seeing is the Key West aquarium which has been around since 1932 and a varied and interesting selection of fish. Ernest Hemmingway lived in Key West at one time and Hemingway house is were you can go to catch a glimpse of how Hemingway lived and see his saltwater swimming pool. There are also three beaches on the southern side of the island ,City beach, Higgs beach and Smathers beach. The water is very calm and clean and all the beaches are popular for different reasons. Another popular area of the keys is Dry Tortrugas one of seven islands and is open as a national park. The park is open for day trips or overnight camping. On garden key you can find fort Gefferson where the visitor centre is located. Garden key is also the only place in which you can stay overnight and there are ten free campsites but booking early is recommended by calling the everglades national park. If you maker your way down to the lower keys be sure to check out the national key deer refuge which is on large tracts of property that sprawl over keys. Those who like to fish should head straight for marathon key where you can also find the dolphin research centre and if your lucky swim with dolphins in supervised programs. |
